AP World Short-Answer Question Strategies
A short-answer response earns credit by completing the task in each part. It does not need the structure of a long essay, but it does need a specific answer and a clear explanation.
Read command words
“Identify” calls for a historically accurate example; “explain” requires a relationship, such as how an event caused a change or why evidence supports an interpretation. Keep parts distinct so a scorer can see which task you are addressing.
Connect the source and your knowledge
For a source-based question, describe a relevant detail and place it in the period. Do not only paraphrase the document. Add a historical example where the task calls for one, and make the link explicit.
Prepare for the 2027 questions
The May 2027 format has three required SAQs, each with source material, completed in 40 minutes. Sources include secondary text, primary text and a non-text source across different periods, as described by the official AP World History: Modern exam overview. Practice reading maps, images and graphs alongside texts. Recheck the 2027 AP History exam updates because older practice sets may present different choices.
Difference between naming and explaining
If a task asks you to explain one effect of Indian Ocean trade, “Swahili city-states” names an example but does not yet explain an effect. A fuller answer might say that exchange helped coastal cities grow as commercial centers where merchants linked East Africa to wider maritime networks. The example and its relationship to the question are both visible.
For a source, separate observation from inference. You might observe that a map depicts routes between ports, then infer that regular maritime connections made long-distance exchange possible in that period. Avoid claiming the map proves a specific political motive if it contains no evidence of one. Each part of a multipart question should respond to its own command word and scope.
Practice routine
Choose a source from a different historical period each day: a short text, image, map or chart. Spend a minute identifying its origin and claim, then write a direct answer to each task. Underline the specific evidence and circle the sentence that explains the connection. Compare the response to scoring guidance and rewrite only the part that fell short. For 2027, rehearse all three required source-based questions rather than assuming an optional fourth question.
