AP World History Exam Tips

Start preparation with the actual exam format, then practice one skill at a time. The May 2027 exam is digital in Bluebook. It includes 55 multiple-choice questions in 55 minutes (40%), three required short answers in 40 minutes (20%), a DBQ (25%) and a required LEQ (15%). The combined free-response section lasts 1 hour 40 minutes. Verify details at College Board exam overview and review AP History exam updates for 2027.

Multiple choice

Read the source attribution and question stem before choosing an answer. Look for the option supported by both historical context and the supplied evidence. Review why each rejected option fails.

Short answer

Answer each task directly in a separate sentence or short paragraph. A named example is useful when you explain how it answers the prompt. For 2027, all three questions have source material and all are required.

DBQ

Use the suggested reading period to sort documents into a few defensible groups. Build a thesis, identify broader context and explain documents as evidence in an argument. Consider audience, purpose, historical situation or perspective where relevant. Keep time to revise the line of reasoning.

LEQ

The 2027 question is required and gives flexibility within a broad prompt. Choose evidence you know accurately. Establish context, make a defensible thesis, support it with specific examples and explain causation, comparison or change as appropriate.

Final practice

Use official Bluebook previews where available. Simulate time limits, then review the rubric and rewrite one weak response. Sleep and practical exam preparation matter more than cramming another unverified list of facts.

Time management by task

Before a timed session, allocate a short check at the end of each written answer for omitted parts and unsupported claims. In MCQ, flag a difficult item and continue if it blocks progress. In SAQ, address all three tasks rather than polishing one response while leaving another blank. In the DBQ, use planning time to group evidence and write a clear thesis; in the LEQ, choose examples that you can explain accurately.

Common preparation traps

Do not confuse rereading with recall, treat every source as equally representative, or memorize one stock thesis that ignores the prompt. Review an error by naming its cause. Practice with current format details: older materials can still teach content while differing from May 2027 SAQ and LEQ presentations. Verify exam administration, device setup and timing with your school and the official exam overview.
